Best Time and Place to Spot Whales in Mauritius
We offer whale watching excursions all year round on the west coast of Mauritius. Sperm whales can be observed throughout the year, while humpback whales visit our region from June to October—though this may vary slightly if the humpbacks arrive earlier or leave later. The whale watching tour begins with our boat departing from Black River (fr. riviere noire). While the focus of this excursion is entirely on the whales, it sometimes happens that we encounter dolphins along the way. If you're particularly interested in a closer look at these playful creatures, we also offer dolphin watching in Mauritius where you can observe them up close and in their natural environment. On rare occasions, we also spot pilot whales, making each trip unique and full of surprises. Since dolphins are often encountered along the way, many guests enjoy the chance of combining dolphin and whale watching in Mauritius – all in one unforgettable tour.
Mauritus’ Whale Watching Season
The presence of whales in Mauritius is a powerful sign of the island’s rich biodiversity and vibrant marine life. Depending on where they are located, we may pass iconic sites such as Tamarin, Flic en Flac, or Le Morne bay. Generally, sperm whales are found further out at sea, while humpback whales are seen closer to the coast. From October to April, during Mauritius’ whale watching season, the water is usually calmer, making early summer outings more peaceful. Around 08:00 AM, the wind tends to pick up—so we recommend choosing the first tour of the day for the best conditions.

Whale Watching in Mauritius: What to Expect on Your Tour

The whale watching tour starts in Black River (fr. riviere noire), at the Yacht Center L’Estuaire in La Balise, aboard our Legend L 26. Toilets are available before and after the trip, as well as on board. Since sperm whales are often found further out at sea, we take a hydrophone on board if necessary to help locate the whales. For safety reasons, even during private excursions, we limit the number of passengers to ensure the boat remains stable in all conditions.
We often have a quick encounter with a group of dolphins on our way to the first stop, where we sometimes lower our hydrophone into the water. However, this is not always necessary as we are in contact with many local people, and often fishermen spot the whales while heading out for their catch.
When whales are sighted, we slowly approach them and reduce our speed. If conditions allow, we even turn off the engines during whale watching to avoid disturbing the animals. Sometimes, the whales swim alongside us for several minutes, gliding gracefully through the deep blue of the Indian Ocean – an unforgettable part of the journey. This tour is more like an expedition—we can never predict how many whales we’ll see or how long the observation will last. Most often, we encounter females with calves, while males are more rarely seen.
It’s a truly overwhelming experience to watch these massive giants of the sea moving majestically through the water. However, there is always a chance that no whales will be spotted off Mauritius on a given day. We also have no control over how many other boats are in the area. The morning excursion is generally quieter, while the later tour tends to be busier. We always do our best to find a peaceful spot just for you, making your encounter with these incredible creatures as intimate and special as possible.
